Berlin Zoo - A zoo unlike any other

We visited the Berlin zoo during our short trip to Berlin and were definitely not disappointed! We didn't originally plan to visit the zoo, however due to our hotel being so close to the zoo and the zoo's architecture grabbing our attention each time we walked past, we decided that we would regret not visiting.

We only planned to visit Berlin zoo for a a couple of hours, however due to the large size of the zoo and the amount of unique animals to see, we ended up leaving the zoo around 5 hours after we entered! Below you can see the Zoo Map for a better idea of the large scale of the zoo, as well as the amount of animals that are located here.

As you can see, there is a lot to see during a trip to Berlin zoo! I would highly recommend picking up one of these maps to ensure that you're able to see everything that you want to see.

The main vocal point of this zoo, is that it is home to two pandas. Pandas are quite rare to see, particularly in Europe, therefore it was a highlight of mine to be able to see some pandas with my own eyes. I can confirm that they are as adorable and fluffy as what you would have likely seen on TV! This zoo is home to lots of unique animals including hippos. The hippos are located within a dome and whilst we were visiting them, one of them let out the most incredibly loud bellow that I have ever heard! It was amazing to be able to see them up close and watch how they communicate with one another. The hippodrome is also home to pigmy hippos, which were equally as fascinating.

Capybaras are an animal that I hear a lot about but I was yet to see them with my own eyes, until this trip. The capybaras were in an extended part of the zoo with lots of fascinating animals, including kangaroos, therefore I would highly recommend taking the walk to visit them.

There are lots of food and drink shops located around the zoo, therefore you will not struggle to find something delicious to consume whilst admiring the animals. I had a very tasty frozen raspberry drink, which was served in a long, dinosaur cup adding to the fun zoo experience.

One of my favourite parts of the zoo was the petting zoo. The petting zoo was home to goats, sheep and lambs, who were all eagerly awaiting to be fed by visitors. There are food stations located outside the area that cost €2 for a big box of food, which I personally thought was great value. We had a lot of fun feeding the animals and Chris particularly bonded with the sheep 🐑.

Another memorable area of the zoo, is the large bird sanctuary which is home to exotic birds from all around the world. The sanctuary is split into continents and in each continent you can witness some beautiful birds that you likely haven't seen before. A particular highlight for me was seeing a Toucan in person. It is such a magnificent and beautiful bird whose colouring is even more vibrant in person! Amongst the bird areas, was a walkthrough area decorated in a forest environment, where you can see birds freely walking and flying around next to you, without having to look through cages. This was a beautiful experience which I would highly recommend doing.

Whilst I have only mentioned a few animals here, Berlin zoo is home to an array of animals including giraffes, elephants, monkeys, lions, penguins, sealions and many many more. I would highly recommend a visit to this fun zoo as there really is something for everyone and I can assure you that you will not be disappointed after taking a trip here. I will leave you with the below gallery of some of the incredible animals that you can expect to see as well as some pictures of our zoo experience 🦓🦁🦍
