Buda or Pest? Which side of the river is the one for you?

Updated: Feb 17, 2019

So you've decided that your next holiday destination is going to be the extremely popular city of Budapest. You're excitedly and frantically searching for areas of interest due to all the positive comments that you've heard about the city. Although, there's just one thing thats playing on your mind: Should you stay in Buda or should you stay in Pest?

Here I explain the main points of interest on each side of the river to allow you to decide which side is most suitable for you.

Exploring Budapest, Heroes Square. Buda and Pest side.
Heroes

Allow me to start by saying that both Buda and Pest are in travelling distance from each other so although you may base yourself on a particular side, please be aware that you are not limited to the activities solely where you are based.

Areas of Interest in Buda:

Batthyány Square

Buda Castle

Buda's Turkish Baths

Memento Park

Buda's Caves

Matthias Church

Areas of Interest in Pest:

St. Peter's Basilica

Hungarian National Parliament

The Ruin Bars

Széchenyi Thermal Baths

Heroes Square

Great Market Hall

When I visited Budapest, our apartment was located in the Pest side where we could often be found in a variety of quirky bars (I would highly recommend visiting the Ruin bars during the evening). This was the ideal location for us, as we would explore all the fascinating sights of Pest during the day, before coming home briefly to relax and freshen up, to then enjoy an evening in bars and restaurants which were in walking distance to our apartment.

In my opinion, the Buda side of the river seems to be more picturesque viewpoints whilst the Pest side is where the majority of bars and restaurants are. It is generally all down to preference but you can guarantee that wherever you decide to stay, it is a certain that you will enjoy every moment of Budapest.
